Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport, Terminal B Concourse

San Jose, California

Terminal B Concourse at Mineta San Jose International Airport is the culmination of a 10-year effort to create an iconic “Gateway to Silicon Valley” and provide visitors a rich and dynamic travel experience. The ridged exterior design evokes the area’s design heritage. Its curved roof features skylights enabling natural light to flood the space, while interior fabric panels filter the direct sunlight and absorb sound. The use of technology facilitates the passenger path of travel, including way finding, information systems for flights, baggage, and gate information, as well as e-ticketing, and business support services. In the spirit of Silicon Valley, even the art installations are technologically innovative.

In addition to serving as Executive Architect for Terminal B, partnered with Design Architect Gensler, Steinberg was a key player in the decade-long master planning effort that defined the required upgrades to the airport. A thoughtful peer review process brought together various stakeholders and experts—airport architects, aviation consultants, airport directors from New York’s JFK, San Francisco International, Sea-Tech, Dallas/Fort Worth, and the New York/New Jersey Port Authority, as well as residents, commuters, and travelers—to best understand the needs of the project. The participants reviewed the master plan and commented on 30 discrete issues in nine areas, including terminal and concourse plans, transportation access, and security issues.
