Whittier College’s Science & Learning Center breaks ground

Whittier College’s Science & Learning Center (SLC) had its groundbreaking ceremony on May 14th. The ceremony, on the College’s upper quad lawn in front of the current 85,000 square foot SLC building, included “sledgehammering” from the Mayor of Whittier, members of the City Council, and the Whittier College’s mascot, Johnny Poet, taking down a brick wall with a backhoe. Whittier College faculty, students, staff, donors, alumni, and partners were present at the event.

Whittier College is embarking on an estimated $35 million complete redesign of the existing science building to create a new Science & Learning Center (SLC). With new laboratories, classrooms that foster cross-disciplinary collaboration, and flexible learning environments, the transformative building will create new opportunities for the entire Whittier College campus. Construction is scheduled to complete in time for fall 2016 classes.
